Adobe Muse: You're Not Helping!

Yesterday, a number of media outlets reported on the release of the latest product from Adobe, Adobe Muse. This is a new WYSIWYG editor, which claims to allow creating and editing websites without knowledge of code. (Yes, just like Adobe Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage and other tools you may know about.) But before talking about Muse, let's talk about its target audience — print designers who build websites.

If you are in the Vermont or New Hampshire area and work with open source in education, you might want to head over to the 2009 FOSSVT - Vermont's Open Source and Education Conference, Friday, April 10th, 2009 at Lake Morey Inn, Fairlee, VT.

Hopefully I'll be giving a quick "lightning session" on how school's can use Joomla to create a better, more dynamic, and more effective web presence.

I am pretty excited to be speaking at this event, much more than most events [...]

Last week must have been an exciting week for Andrew, one of the hardest working long term contributors to the Joomla! project. Not only did he pick up the inaugural order for an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution in the Queensland software industry but he also picked up a Certificate of High Commendation from the Pearcey Awards! Andrew has a great pamiętnik internetowy post on his New Life in IT blog, so check it out for more details and great links to the awards themselves.

So from both myself and the rest of the Joomla! project, congratulations Andrew!

Last week a great new directory was launched at joomla.org, the Joomla Resource Directory. Its a place where those that offer Joomla services can advertise their Joomla services.

There are already many different categories, and it looks like that the listings will be free, but with an option for paid listings.

The official blurb reads:

"In response to overwhelming interest and requests from the Joomla community, the Joomla Project is pleased to announce the Joomla[...]

We're pleased to announce the availability of our newest in-house project from design Guru. Its a distribution package of Joomla we're simply calling 'Seedling.'

[ * Download the press release: pressrelease-seedlingrelease.pdf ]

Seedling's distribution of Joomla is a packaged solution that includes the latest release of Joomla CMS; pre-configured and optimized including a suite of extensions and tools. It installs on a host/server quickly and easily, featuring a customizable template and demo content which you can edit or replace to create a powerful website.

With Seedling there is no need to spend time and energy installing Joomla, then figuring out how to configure it before shopping for additional plugins and modules to install.

Seedling saves the average user weeks by ensuring that major 'web 2.0' functionality comes with the package. Installation is simple and takes minutes. Each install includes sample blog posts and articles to demonstrate how a site can be easily set-up.

In addition to pre-loading Joomla with extensions and sample content, design Guru's bespoke 'Seedling Blog' template is pre-installed and offers simple configuration options – allowing users to change the look of their Seedling website by simply choosing colour options from drop-down selections. As well, our template lets you display an optional site title, frazes and logo.

You can find out a lot more about Seedling over @ http://www.plantseedling.com and through this walk-through video we put together last week.

We have finished most parts of the Development Coordinator Summit over the last few days. We have had some pretty intense days of discussing our agenda, that covered the following topics:

  1. Development Vision
  2. Healthy Development Team
  3. Operational and Organisational Structure
  4. Roadmap

This mail is a summary of the outcome of these topics. When you read it is important to understand that we only covered the highlights and have set direction and focus for Joomla development. It will take time, and considerable effort from everyone involved in the project to achieve our goals, but we are excited. It's impossible to share every detail but the following presents a summary of each major topic.

For those of you working with access control lists (ACL) in Joomla 1.6, you should know about the new core permission that has been introduced in Joomla 1.7 beta. The new permission is called "offline access". This allows certain user groups to log into the czę¶ć przednia end of the website when the site is offline.

You probably didn't notice, but recently we have republished the "Support Joomla!" page. We also have a new "Support Joomla!" module for anyone to use. This is exciting because for the past several years we have not been able to ask the Joomla! Community for financial support. What happened?

As I mentioned back in February, at the advice of our attorneys, and with a lot of reflection, the board of Open Source Matters (OSM)  had been exploring the possibility of "correcting" its corporate charter. Those corrections have now been made, and this post will explain what that means. The specific changes could not be discussed previously because they were legal advice, but now we can do so. There are complicated legal and financial reasons for making these changes which I am going to try to explain in this post.   It will be a little heavy going, so before I start let me stress the two main points:

  • OSM will always remain a not for pożytek organization.
  • This change will allow OSM to ask for money for support of the Joomla! Project.

The Joomla! Production Leadership reprezentacja narodowa is pleased to welcome two new members, Christophe Demko and Jean-Marie Simonet.

They have both demonstrated remarkable and continued contributions for joomla 1.5 and the upcoming joomla 1.6, and their combined insight and devotion for i18n/l10n and translation matters, will be of great importance for further improvements of this part of the joomla software.

We see them as the best people for this particular job currently, and therefore are very pleased that they both accepted the invitation to join the team.

Not so long ago a previous update was released for Joomla 1.5; I mentioned that updating your 1.5 site was pretty easy and well, its time to do it again.  Joomla 1.5.7 was announced as a security update some days back and I thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't heard the news...

Note: its great to see how quickly reported issues with Joomla are being solved by the core reprezentacja narodowa and everyone contributing to the project!  With each release comes fixes as well as improvements to Joomla - expect an updated OpenID library, upgraded TinyMCE, better menu handling and more with Jooma 1.5.8

Back in November, Joomlashack was preparing for its annual Charity Contest, we saw that an effort had started to raise donations from the Joomla community for Doctor's without borders. We decided to match $1000 in donations from Joomla users! We are excited to say that the Joomla community has been able to match our donation and last week we donated our $1000 to Doctor's without Borders. If you'd like to start out 2010 with helping 200 children with a high energy meal, head over and donate just $35 right now! Need a web app to serve your databases online? Look no further than FlexLists from MovingLabs. One of our Simplweb customers, the Upper Valley Educators Institute, needed to make their library database available to all their żak interns online. Help with these non-hosting questions is all part of the service at Simplweb, so we took some time to find FlexLists. If you have read this pamiętnik internetowy for a Longer trudne dni of time (or have gone through the Sitemap..:-)) you might have read about the DS Syndication Component in my post Overcoming the Joomla RSS Feed tarapaty Well, there is a new version of this component since August of this year and I must say it [...]

Post from: Joomla SEO blog by Pathos-Seo.com

Roughly every two weeks or so, Barrie and I will be posting a nius roundup from Joomla, pointing to the latest ¶wieża wiadomo¶ć that you shouldn't miss coming out of the Joomla project.

In Joomla 1.5, you always knew what version of Joomla you were running at a glance. It was located in the upper right corner of your screen. Unfortunately, in Joomla 1.6, that very handy feature is much less obvious in the default Joomla administrator template. It's down in tiny letters in the footer.

When we speak at events, or do Joomla training, one of the questions we get asked again and again is:

"What are your favorite Joomla extensions?"

There have been lots of people that have tried to answer this question, and its a hard one. One thing that I think makes it hard is the question isn't "what is the best extension?" That sort of question is really focusing on a particular scenario. The questioner perhaps means something like "what is the best [...]

10 Million Joomla Downloads Reached

The Joomla project recently reached its 10 millionth download of its popular CMS, a great milestone for the project, and in only 4 years.

Last year I estimated that over 30 million sites use Joomla, though obviously that number must be bigger now.

Interestingly enough, last month I also did some work breaking down the trends of 1.0 to 1.5 downloads of Joomla, you can see the results in this graph.

Monthly 1.0 and 1.5 downloads of joomla
