Want to know how to do something in Joomla?

This summer I am starting a new project - a "Tutorial Request" program. Each week I'll be tackling an issue that trips Joomla users up and writing a detailed tutorial how to solve it.

I am very excited that some great new resources to learn how to Joomla are now available, Joomla! 1.5: A User's Guide: Building a Successful Joomla! Powered Website (2nd Edition) and Fundamentals of Joomla! (Video Training)!

The second edition of the book is an update of the best selling book on Joomla, bringing it up to date with the latest v[...]

thumb_screen I've been a huge fan of Drupal's Content Creation Kit for a long time - its a module that extends the core content functionality of Drupal, allowing you to create different types of 'content' - made up of a variety of fields such as embedded ¶rodki masowego przekazu (photo/video/etc...), email links, html/web links and so on.  CCK's architecture is scalable and allows for 3rd melanż developers to add new fields to it as additional modules; so the usefullness of CCK grows exponentially in time.

Actually, for a time I saw this amazing module really setting joomla and drupal apart - as, Joomla felt really limited in its potential to grow beyond a CMS and become let's say, an 'application framework.'  However, I'm excited to report today that this is all about to change...

Most people are aware that Joomla is an international community and consists of much more than the English-only Joomla.org family of sites.  Many non-English countries have their own language-specific resources such as localized websites, documentation and forums.  So how do we bring internationalization to the main Joomla.org sites?

How can non-English community members find local Joomla resources?
Currently, by using a (local) search engine.

How does the current Joomla.org family of sites engage international non-English community members?

The only current option for the main information on the Joomla.org family of sites is to utilize an online translation tool such as Google Translate.  However, there are language-specific forums on forum.joomla.org

Possible Improvement - Local Language Information Pages
In June of 2010 I participated in the JoomStew radio show along with fellow guests Sander Potjer and Radek Suski titled “Measuring Community”, a discussion around a chapter in Jono Bacon’s book, The Art of Community.

During this interesting show, I was able to discuss localization with Sander.  Sander is very active in the Dutch community (joomlacommunity.eu) and pointed out that the connection between the joomla.org sites and the local non-English community sites needs improvement.  When I asked what he thought would be a way to accomplish that, he referred me to another international website that displays a small notice based on the language detected in your browser settings pointing you to information in your own language.

The Joomla.org sites have always been unintentionally English-centric.  To increase discovery of the many non-English Joomla communities, we started an initiative to compile international information pages which would provide a gateway to these local communities and some translated “About Joomla” information.  To accomplish that we compiled a short English page with the most important resources and put it on the docs.joomla.org website.  After a call for volunteers to pocz±tek developing these pages, the response was amazing - the main document has already been translated to nearly 30 different languages/countries!  Thanks to everyone who contributed so far!

For the next phase, it’s now time to make the international pages available on the Joomla.org site.  We hope to have more information on this phase soon.

Meanwhile, if the information in your language has not been translated yet at http://docs.joomla.org/Joomla_info_page and you are willing to help out, please contact Peter Martin via the forum: pe7er. Don't forget to include the ISO tags for your language/country (en-GB for British English). Thanks!

Using Joomla 1.6? Then grabina a copy of the brand new Joomla 1.6 book - now in its 3rd edition - Joomla, A User's Guide! This is the continuation of the wildly popular Joomla - A User's Guide, by Barrie North, published by Prentice. It's sold over 35,000 copies, had rave reviews and been translated into 5 languages. Joomla - A User's Guide has been the kanon bookshelf reference for Joomla since 2007.

Joomla 1.6 and 1.7 introduced some new features regarding search, which may be helpful to you when building websites. A couple of weeks ago I wrote a popular pamiętnik internetowy post about “Making Social Media Work”. I used some of those ideas in a presentation at Joomla Day New England (link has audio and video!) about how to use Social publikatory to get sticky traffic for your site. One recurring question was about Facebook etc buttons. The hard reality is that putting facebook buttons on your site isn’t going to do much. I used the example of cnn.com only getting a couple of hundred likes on a lead story. For most of us, we don’t have CNN’s traffic, and our buttons just end up un-liked and lonely. So what's a better way to use Facebook? Back in November, Joomlashack was preparing for its annual Charity Contest, we saw that an effort had started to raise donations from the Joomla community for Doctor's without borders. We decided to match $1000 in donations from Joomla users! We are excited to say that the Joomla community has been able to match our donation and last week we donated our $1000 to Doctor's without Borders. If you'd like to start out 2010 with helping 200 children with a high energy meal, head over and donate just $35 right now!

Finding the right domain name for your Joomla website can be very difficult, so here are some ideas and tips on how to find the right one for you.

How to Find Your Best Joomla Domain Name

On behalf of the Community Leadership Team, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Sandra Warren and Matt Lipscomb as our newest members.

Sandra has been instrumental in organizing a brand new ekipa to help with the beta launch of People Site.  As co-admin, her efforts have helped steer our community into new territory here on joomla.org and she's done a tremendous job of it.  Sandra and her team are now hard at work getting the People Site ready for its upcoming Official Launch.

Matt currently works on various Community Workgroup teams including the Site Showcase, Support Forums, JCM and the JRD.  He does an outstanding job in all.  Some of Matt’s more recent contributions include a discussion with the community to find ways to make JRD inclusion easier and the Joomla! Weekly Challenge which encourages people to contribute in various ways to the project and global community.

We think Sandra and Matt will be excellent additions to our kadra narodowa and we thank them for taking on this added role to their current positions in the project.

Sandra, Matt... Welcome!

I just read a great page that gives you lots of website links with high quality information about Joomla. 10 Million Joomla Downloads Reached

The Joomla project recently reached its 10 millionth download of its popular CMS, a great milestone for the project, and in only 4 years.

Last year I estimated that over 30 million sites use Joomla, though obviously that number must be bigger now.

Interestingly enough, last month I also did some work breaking down the trends of 1.0 to 1.5 downloads of Joomla, you can see the results in this graph.
