2009 FOSSVT Vermont Open Source and Education Conference
If you are in the Vermont or New Hampshire area and work with open source in education, you might want to head over to the 2009 FOSSVT - Vermont's Open Source and Education Conference, Friday, April 10th, 2009 at Lake Morey Inn, Fairlee, VT.
Hopefully I'll be giving a quick "lightning session" on how school's can use Joomla to create a better, more dynamic, and more effective web presence.
I am pretty excited to be speaking at this event, much more than most events [...]
Not so long ago a previous update was released for Joomla 1.5; I mentioned that updating your 1.5 site was pretty easy and well, its time to do it again. Joomla 1.5.7 was announced as a security update some days back and I thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't heard the news...
Note: its great to see how quickly reported issues with Joomla are being solved by the core team and everyone contributing to the project! With each release comes fixes as well as improvements to Joomla - expect an updated OpenID library, upgraded TinyMCE, better karta handling and more with Jooma 1.5.8
Join us at the 2nd annual Joomla Day in Vermont - June 5, 2010, 9 AM - 5 PM at Marlboro College, Marlboro, Vermont, USA. Joomla Day's are a great way of meeting peers and learning about this award winning CMS. This will be the second year of Joomla Day New England, last year's event was highly successful with the limited places filled up in just a couple of weeks! Just 20 minutes west of Brattleboro, there are still a few places left for this year's conference - but register now - http://newengland.joomladayusa.org/!Be sure to read a full description of SecureJoomla on in our Joomla Extensions and Components store.
Once in a while a product for Joomla comes along and really makes me sit up and pay attention. One such recent product was a new Joomla security component called SecureLive. A simple module that you can install on your site and immediately secure Joomla more effectively.
Now, I'll admit to not knowing much about the hard core details of server and Joo[...]
Back in Nov 2006, I wrote the following pamiętnik internetowy post: What is 'contributing' to an Open Source Project?
Every so often I like to take a look at how we are now doing, in comparision to how we have been doing in the past. Having taken the time to do so recently, I'm really encouraged, and hopefully as a follow up in my series, I hope you'll benefit for reflecting with me, if you've been around for a while, or if you're only new, joining me and contributing.
Let me start with my conclusion I wrote back then:
There is no utopia. No one, and no project, is perfect. Do we have faults, yes, some of them may be more important to you than they are to me, however the fact remains, if you are here for Joomla, the structure is already in place (maybe not ideal, or perfect) for your contribution to be accepted.
From my point of view, this still stands as true today as it was almost 4 years ago when I first wrote this. However, what I'm most encouraged about is the progress we have made in being able to accept the many and varied contributions of so many people. In some ways our structure has also improved to facilitate this. Let's dig a little deeper into this now.
What is contributing to an Open Source Project? Post from: Joomla SEO blog by Pathos-Seo.com Joomla 2.5 is due out in January, which is the culmination of the 1.6/1.7/2.5 series. Now is the time to be mapping out those things we want to accomplish in the next series, which will culminate in the 3.5 release in July 2013. At the recent joint summit we discussed the process for establishing goals and milestones for the long-term Joomla releases. We want more seats at the table for the technical discussions on how to move things forward. Once every six months the PLT and developers will meet just before or after an existing event to work on the roadmap. Our first Roadmap Meeting will be on Friday, October 21, 2011 in New York City, the day before Joomla! Day NYC 2011. This is a working session that is open to anyone interested in working on designing or creating features for the next major release of Joomla. Our goal is to come out of this meeting with working documents for implementing different features. There is no cost to attend the event but you must register in advance. Not everyone with an interest in working on this will be able to attend in person so we are exploring options for including virtual attendees. We encourage everyone to have a voice and to vote or add ideas to the pomysł Pool at ideas.joomla.org. For details, see the posting in News at the Developer site. Comments are welcome and can be shared in at the JPeople site in this thread At the Joint Leadership Summit (JLS) held in San Jose, California from July 29-31, 2011, one subject which received a lot of attention was our projectâs leadership structure. It was widely felt that making some changes to our projectâs leadership structure can strengthen communication and collaboration between teams, as well as improve oversight and accountability for all contributors and teams. The proposed changes aim to improve productivity and community engagement throughout all areas of the project. Seems like its going to be one of those skraj days... /rant on I just found Yet Another Post About Wordpress SEO (YAPAWS) that is saying its better than Joomla's. This is simply not true!!!!! Last year I tested Wordpress and Joomla SEO, and guess what? There was no real difference, if anything, Joomla was better! With Joomla 1.6 release candidate upon us, one of the first new features many Joomla enthusiasts are likely to explore is ACL (access control levels). Like most software, you change settings and see what happens. Whatever you do, be very careful when configuring the świetnie Admin permission. Captain's log, September the 13th 2010. Joomlashack University is officially 1 year old this month! It's our ANNIVERSITY! Hard to believe we've gone from a handful of sign-ups to almost 2100 subscriptions in just under a year's time--making us the #1 source for online Joomla training! When I created Joomlashack University in October 2009, I had one goal. I wanted to make the the hands-down best way to learn Joomla.
I just read a great page that gives you lots of website links with high quality information about Joomla. Altough the Title of 30+ Joomla Tools and Resources doesn’t really give you tools like modules or components, a lot of the sites featured in this post do have some fine extensions for your Joomla website. I know I [...]
I have had a couple of emails this week from people asking me about Joomla book recommendations. Back in 2006 when the first edition of my book on Joomla was published, there were hardly any others around. Its been great to see that over the last 12 months we have seen a lot more published. As an author, its encouraging to see the growth, but even more, I think that the volume and pace of book publication is a pretty good indicator of the health of an open source project. I thought I'd take a second to do a round up of 16 Joomla titles around right now. I thought I would pull some metrics from Amazon to give you a sense of how much people like the offerings (rather than my own opinions).
Yesterday I showed how to Hide Columns When Editing the przód End of Joomla as it often causes overlap issues that make editing difficult. In this post I'll show a quick and easy way to show different content to different users. Being able to show different content to registered and logged in visitors is a very common request for a Joomla site. By default, you can have Joomla show the "intro" copy to guests and they must to log in to see the rest. But what if you want to show some specific content to guest visitors, and then different content to registered users once they have logged in. There are a couple of extensions that give this functionality, but as a rule of thumb, I'll always trying and use the core if I can to get what I want. In this case, I figured out a simple method that worked for my needs.
Many people have been waiting for several extensions to catch up to Joomla 1.6 and Joomla 1.7 before building sites in these Joomla versions. In general, most extensions that worked in Joomla 1.6 are also working in Joomla 1.7. However, several popular extensions developers have not yet released their products as 1.6 or 1.7 compatible. Here's status on several.
If anyone can show me with objective scientific evidence that Wordpress is better for SEO than Joomla I will give you a free Joomlashack Develop [...]
Dear Community,
It's been almost three months since I took over the role of Trademark team leader. Three very, very busy months are behind TM reprezentacja narodowa and I feel it's time to give you a report of what's been going on. I know that a lot of people tend to observe TM kadra narodowa and it's activities as a bunch of dark hooded guys up in the High tower doing the dark arts. Well, we're not. And I koncept to put a stop to this public wygląd by making TM reprezentacja narodowa more open to the community.
So, what's been going on lately?
Our first major task was to clean the backlog of all the domains that waited approval. Believe me, it wasn't an easy task. Thanks to extreme efforts of Claire Mandville we managed to bring that list to it's minimum. I've been contacted by people thanking me and telling me that they completely forgot that they even submitted their domains for approval cause over a year passed since they did so. One of our goals is that such things never happen again.
TM kadra narodowa got reorganized internally. What does this mean? Well, my main inicjatywa was to make us all obsolete. Me, as a kadra narodowa leader, the first. TM team, and any team as a matter of fact, is about the whole kadra narodowa not individuals. If you tend to organize your team around one or two individuals what happens when one of your individuals leaves - everything falls apart. And we don't want that. The decission is made to spread the work between sub-teams of the main team and so two new "virutal" roles were created - The Domain Keeper and marka Keeper. In our case those two roles were taken by Claire Mandville and Dianne Henning. Each of the sub-teams takes care of education of new members too.
This brings us to the next point - documentation. Since we're not dealing with the dark arts and the secret knowledge we decided to document every procedure we're dealing with on a daily basis. In community projects kadra narodowa members come and go. And that is normal. The przeciwność shows its ugly face when we realize that no one really knows how are the things done. To prevent that we decided to document everything we do.
Documentation itself is not enough if you don't have a record of real people doing the job on a daily basis. In my personal opinion there is no better way to do that than via mailing list. Thus, TM kadra narodowa finally got it's internal mailing list so that everything we do gets archived. Such an archive is of great help to newcomers - I should know. When I came to OSM the mailing list archive helped me understand what is going on.
One of our big concerns are TM violations around the world. People using Joomla! TM without an approval or people who got an approval in the past but got lost somewhere down the road. Working with violations is somehow my personal trade - back in Free Software Foundation Europe(FSFE) I used to work on GPL violations around the world. That's why apart from working with the reprezentacja narodowa on organizing things most of my time goes on checking the violations that get reported one way or the other.
How many people do you know who get lost in the procedure of submitting their domain to OSM? A lot. I've noticed that quite some people make a distinction between OSM and Joomla! and they don't quite understand why do they need an approval of Joomla! related web sites by some OSM group. In order to try and fix that we came up with an myśl to move most of TM related termin from OSM web site to Joomla! website. This is currently in process of planning along with reorganizing TM material so that non-legal people can easily understand what are they allowed to do and what is a violation of Joomla!'s trademark.
Three months later...
A lot has been done in just three months. I'd like to thank the whole TM ekipa on their time and dedication. Time to move forward. Plans are set into motion and there is no going back. In order to make it all a reality we need your help - help from the community. When I started my TM work the propozycja of bringing TM team closer to the community was my guiding star. But how to do it? Simple. Bring the community closer to TM team.
Back in FSFE we have local teams in many countries. This helps us be closer to local communities and above all, it helps us speak their languages. I find this extremely important. Languages are a personal zamiłowanie of mine and I know the power they hold. That's why I'd like to have more people from different Translation teams in TM team. Joomla! speaks so many languages I can't even start to count them all. And that is a power beyond all powers. That is something that can make TM kadra narodowa extremely efficient. Something that can bring knowledge of trademark to every single Joomla! user out there.
So, this is a call to all Translation teams out there - if you are interested in helping TM team, please, reach me or any other TM ekipa member and let's początek working together.
Awaiting your responses at:Â http://people.joomla.org/groups/viewdiscussion/686-From+the+trenches+of+Trademark+team+dicussion.html?groupid=579

10 Million Joomla Downloads Reached
The Joomla project recently reached its 10 millionth download of its popular CMS, a great milestone for the project, and in only 4 years.
Last year I estimated that over 30 million sites use Joomla, though obviously that number must be bigger now.
Interestingly enough, last month I also did some work breaking down the trends of 1.0 to 1.5 downloads of Joomla, you can see the results in this graph.
